Addressing Burnout: Insights and Strategies from Our Recent Webinar

“Burnout” is one of the latest buzzwords... and just like “innovative” and “literally,” it’s starting to lose its meaning. But that doesn’t make it less of an issue. Workforce recruitment and retention continues to be the #1 problem our clients face. So during our recent webinar, we dug into the root causes of burnout, its consequences, and actionable strategies to combat it.

Here’s a short recap of the key takeaways, but feel free to CLICK HERE and watch the full recording.

What is burnout?

Burnout is defined as emotional exhaustion, disengagement, and reduced productivity. It affects nearly half of the global workforce. In the U.S. alone, it accounts for $300 billion annually in lost productivity, absenteeism, and turnover costs - and it disproportionately affects women and younger workers (more than 85% of Gen Z employees report high stress levels).

What causes burnout?

Before we can solve any problems, we have to understand the root causes. We broke it down into three categories:

  • Unfair - unrealistic workloads without sufficient support or timeframes

  • Unclear - lack of communication or misalignment of expectations

  • Unmet - minimal opportunities for personal and professional growth

How to address the causes of burnout

Intentionally building and nurturing a company culture that reflects the values and priorities of the organization takes time and effort, but it is one of the best ways to prevent or mitigate burnout among employees. There are policies you can implement like hybrid work or “no meeting” days, but the DNA of the company is built upon the daily interactions and the way teams treat one another in the workplace.

Offering professional development opportunities and investing in mindful management are also critical components of healthy work environments. Incorporating benefits into employment packages can get you started on the right foot and consistently evaluating and improving internal practices will keep you on track.

What’s Next?

Addressing burnout is a journey, not a quick fix. Employers must communicate their plan and encourage a space for open dialogue, celebrate small wins along the way, and budget (money AND time) for solutions that foster long-term well-being.
